The sped up range is 115-130%

Sped up versions usually sit between 115% and 130%, with 125% the most common choice; past about 132% the sound reads as nightcore.

A sped up version has a different goal than nightcore, and the goal explains the range. The point of a sped up edit is the same song with more momentum: the singer should still sound like themselves, the hook should stay recognizable, and the version should work in a short video where energy matters and time is limited. That goal is met between 115% and 130%. Less than that and the change is hard to notice; more than that and the voice turns into a different character, which is a different style with its own name.

The pitch rises with the tempo — 12 semitones per doubling of speed, the way tape behaves. At 125%, that is +3.9 semitones: a clearly brighter voice that is still recognizably the original singer. This linked rise is part of the sped up sound people expect; a version that is faster at the original pitch sounds subtly wrong to an audience raised on the linked kind.

BPM scales directly with the setting, which helps when a version is meant to match a video edit. A 100 BPM song at 125% plays at 125 BPM. If you are cutting to a target tempo, divide the target by the original BPM to get the exact rate you need. The same arithmetic works on the song's length: a 3 minute 20 second song at 125% plays in 2 minutes 40 seconds, which matters when a version has to fit a fixed clip.

Where sped up ends and nightcore begins

The line sits around 132%, and it is drawn by the voice, not the tempo.

Up to roughly 130%, a listener hears the original singer performing faster and brighter. Somewhere just past that — 132% is a fair marker — the raised resonances stop registering as the same person. The voice becomes a new character: lighter, younger, more artificial. That change of identity is exactly what nightcore wants and exactly what a sped up version wants to avoid, which is why the two styles divide so cleanly at a number.

The practical use of the line: if your goal is a sped up version and the setting you like is drifting past 130%, the source song is probably too slow for the style. Either accept that you are making nightcore and go to 135%, or hold at 125-128% and let the version be gentler than you first imagined. Versions parked exactly on the line tend to sound uncommitted — clearly processed, but without the full nightcore character to justify it.

Why 125% became the common choice

It is a convention, but a convention with reasons. At 125%, a four-minute song plays in about 3 minutes 12 seconds, hooks arrive noticeably sooner, and typical pop tempos land in dance territory — 100 BPM becomes 125 BPM. The pitch rise of +3.9 semitones is large enough to feel like a version rather than a playback error, while nearly every commercial vocal still sounds like the original artist. And the number itself is easy to work with: one quarter faster, a simple fraction, which matters when many people converge on a shared practice. Settings from 120% to 128% all live in the same zone; 125% is simply the middle of it that everyone can name.

Matching a target BPM

When the version has to sit under a video edit, work backwards from the tempo you need. The rate is the target BPM divided by the original BPM. A 92 BPM song that needs to feel like 115 BPM: 115 ÷ 92 = 1.25, so set 125%. A 110 BPM song aimed at 128 BPM: 128 ÷ 110 = 1.16, so set 116%. If the division gives you a number past 1.30, the source is too slow for a sped up version at that target — pick a slower target or accept the nightcore character that comes with the higher setting.

A note on loudness

A faster, higher version pushes more energy into the frequency range where hearing is most sensitive, so it feels louder than the original at the same volume. Keep an eye on the waveform, and lower the volume slightly before export if the peaks run high — a clean file survives being turned up later; a clipped one does not.

Should I add reverb to a sped up song?
